We are on the brink of potentially opening up a class geared more towards kids with special needs.
Now that I have a staff of instructors and student leaders firmly in place, I feel that I may now have the resources to facilitate such a class.
Mark J. Speranza has a whole methodology and program behind this, called Inclusion Advantage. Theoretically, it looks pretty good.
However, I've never tried it, and I don't know anyone who has tried running a program based on his concepts. I'd be curious to know the results of those who have.
I may have blogged about this topic before. I just didn't have the guts to run a program like this in the past, because it was pretty much just me.
It is very clear that for a program like this to work, you need another instructor, and some student helpers. It seems that without this very important foundation, you may be setting yourself up for a short run.
This is an interesting market. From what I hear, this population is hugely underserved. It seems that there aren't really many activities designed for this population in many mainstream businesses. The marketing could be very targeted, by going to special needs teachers at elementary schools.
My feeling is if a good infrastructure is put into place, it can happen, and potentially be a great new revenue stream. By good infrastructure, I am referring to specifically people who can help out with the program. And, the help needs to be voluntary, which might be tricky, but then again, there are lots who volunteer their time with organizations who help with special needs kids.
The only one I would imagine gets paid is the instructor who is on staff, leading the class.
If you have had experience running a class/program that was targeted to this population, I'd love to hear your experience with it, and especially if you've tried Mark Speranza's Inclusion Advantage program.
