Running A Business is not for Everyone

My wife told me a long time ago that running a business is not for everyone. While you do get the satisfaction of working for yourself, there's a daunting amount of work that goes behind it. Some folks would rather not do all that work, and just work a steady job and get a paycheck.

What I'm about to write might sound like a downer, I assure you, it's not. It's more me being reflective, so that I can counter it.

At my core, I am finding that I really was not meant to be a business owner. I do not have the right attributes.

If I did have the right attributes, I'd be highly successful by now.

1. At the heart of it all, I am lazy. I hate to say that, but I am. The reason I am is that I found myself being able to get by on being lazy, and that is not a good thing. In other words, I was sort of rewarded for being lazy.

A good business owner is anything but lazy. A good business owner is constantly working.

2. I lack discipline and follow through. I have good intentions, and start things, but I end up not following through many times, and that is due to laziness.

A good business owner has exceptional discipline and follow through, and gets things done, even if it hurts.

3. I fluctuate in my performance too much. I may do something really well one day, but the next day I'll just be too lazy to do it well again.

A good business person is consistent, all the time.

4. I fear numbers, and hate hearing about numbers.

A good business owner is always concerned about statistics, and is always on top of the numbers to better guide decisions and actions.

5. I'm very passive about my product. I'll tell people if they ask, but I generally don't go out of my way to tell folks about what I do.

A good business owner is always on, and will cleverly use the right opportunity to inject a pitch for the business.

So in essence, I have the opposite of what it takes to be a successful business person, which explains why I'm not at 300 students by now. I easily could be, if I possessed the 5 traits I outlined that I don't have.

My goal is to eventually rise above my weaknesses and shortcomings in order to be a better business person.

Motivation is key. I have the knowledge base to be a success, but the motivation to handle it all at once is not always there.

I simply was not meant to be a business person, but I have very few options other than this for a career at this point.

Since I was able to live relatively comfortably getting by on minimal effort, I was rewarded for not putting in too much work.

I am writing all of this so that I can change my ways. It won't happen over night, but acknowledgement is the first step.
