This is one of my big challenges, now. Staying motivated and prioritizing the mounds of work that I have sitting in front of me.

I am always and will forever be an artist first. Unfortunately, as an artist, my mind sometimes needs chaos and conflict in order to come up with something good.

But I am trying not to let that happen too much. It can be self sabotage sometimes, where you regress, or (more often than not) you don't get the results that you could have, because you didn't have the best planning.

These next 3-5 days I have to make decisions and take actions that I know could lead to huge differences in my school's bottom line.

You'd think with that sort of excitement, I'd be totally motivated to jump on it and get crackin'.

But no. Instead, I am here blogging about not being motivated or good at prioritizing.

As a genuine creative artist, it is sometimes very difficult to walk the line of art and commerce. The quirks that inspire the artist to be unique and give the business the edge on its product can be the same quirks that prevent good administrative practices.

Agh! Come on, brain. Get it together!

Oh, right, you're reading this. So, if you have any strategies on how to motivate yourself, I'm certainly all ears. Well, eyes, b/c this is text.

Santanu,

I have never heard you sound like this. This post caught me by surprise. Here are my suggestions.

1. Watch a motivational movie-one that is a story or perseverance. I would recommend "The pursuit of happiness"-Will Smith. When I watch a movie of adversity it reminds of how luck I am and inspires me to step up my game. It does not matter if it is a movie that you saw before, just pick something that shows someone beating the odds.

2. Become a master self motivator. Realize that it is up to you and only you to snap out of it. We can all offer advice and suggestions but in business self motivation is a must.

3. Write down your plan. It sounds like you have to make some tough decisions, it is always best not to make an emotional when it comes to business. Thats why writing t down will help you see what decisions you really need to do rather than acting on emotion.

4. Think of your family. What can me more important than them? My family motivates me to grow each year. You are the leader and they are watching you. Do it for them!

5. Read-I know you read a lot of books. Pick out a new one on self help or motivation. Get fired up Santanu, you can do it!

Hope this helps.

Momentum and buffer days are the secret to self-motivation...

On the days that you are not motivated, start with the simpliest things on your to-do list and knock out all of the easy things first. As you start crossing off things on your to-do list you'll build momentum, which in turn builds motivation.

Also make sure you have buffer days in your schedule to help re-charge your batteries. Buffer days are the days where you stay away from your school and do something that is not related to work. Find a hobby outside of the school to wrap your brain around and you'll be suprised how re-freshed you'll feel when you return to work the next day (or two).

For me, a day on the boat with my dogs is the perfect buffer day and reminds me of why I work so hard - to have time to enjoy my life!

Hope this motivates you:)
