How to Harness the Power of the Subconscious Mind and Positive In-Put

How to Harness the Power of the Subconscious Mind and Positive In-Put

By: Mike Dolpies

Studying human nature is a fascinating thing. As martial artist we are always searching for the “answers so success.” Maybe it is our success that we are searching for or maybe we are trying to figure out how to help our students become more successful. Probably both!

The answers are buried in the subconscious mind. We may have a goal in mind. Our students may want their black belts. But until we can convince our subconscious to accept the goal nothing much will change.

Emotions have a whole lot to do with it too. Think about a student who started off full of enthusiasm and excitement for your program, but then suddenly stopped showing up to class, then soon or latter stopped paying. You beat yourself up trying to figure out what you did wrong. In most cases you did nothing wrong at all. What happened was the subconscious desire to return to the comfort zone and stay home rather than come to class beat the conscious desire to stay involved with martial arts.

This is probably easiest to see with your adult students. “I know I should go train tonight, but ‘happy hour’ is so much more inviting, I can get started again next week.” Then next week comes and they don’t show up!

With kids the dynamic is more interesting because you have their parents involved too. Sadly, in many of the cases of students quitting, parents just throw up their hands and that’s that! So let’s talk about the kids for a sec…

Most successful school owners know that when you are teaching kids you have the double duty of teaching their parents too. Your job is to train the subconscious minds of both the parents and the students. The goal is to get the parents on YOUR side so that they see you as a valuable resource. Your goal is to produce lasting positive changes in your students.

All lasting change is preceded by the gathering of “Information.” Think about it, when did you have your best breakthroughs as a school owner? You discovered some information and some knowledge and then either slowly or quickly you took some action for the better based on the information.

Information influences human behavior. In short, “in-put = out-put.” It either happens right away or eventually, but make no mistake; information influences behavior!

So- I guess we could get out parents some good information that will eventually influence them in a positive way. You and I both know that if they choose to allow their kids to stay with your program their kids will be better off because of it.

A few of my clients are already taking advantage of a very cool and simple way to get the parents of their students access to some powerful parenting information that causes them to value martial arts a lot more. Of course the bi-product of getting the parents of their students this powerful and easy to digest parenting information is to enhance retention and help in the student recruitment department.
