Summary of Your Martial Arts Training:
To know me you must know my work ethic. At age 17, when I started karate training, every day I would take each waza I learned that day and go home and practice it no less than 500 times. If I was shown 6 waza, then I would perform 3000 repetitions before I retired to bed.
Note: I was asked to become a dojo deshi (live in private student) for the following: Shotokan (early 80's) Hidetaka Nishiyama, (Early 90's) Robukai - Kyoshi Yamazaki and Bare Knuckle legend Frenchman Girard Finot.
In 1973, I began Goju training under my karate "father" N. Gosei Yamaguchi (USA) head of the US Goju Kai, son of the infamous Gogen "The Cat" Yamaguchi (Japan) who is to be considered my karate "grandfather". Gogen was responsible for the innovation of Jyu Kumite (Free Sparring), forming the All Japan Karate Federation and was the first 10th Dan in the history of karate. ref. Guiness Book of Records circa 1976 Heading:Sport, Subheading:Karate, My karate "Great Grandfather" is Chojun Miyagi (Okinawa), the man accredited with coming up with the word "Karate" and for creating the first style of karate to be taught as a system in schools called Goju Ryu Karate Jutsu. I received my Shodan from Mr. Yamaguchi after ten arduous years of training and remained a shodan for the next three years. I also trained with Motoo Yamakura for 13 years. Mr. Yamakura was an All Japan kumite and kata champion, won the Henry Cho in Madison Square Garden and was granted US citizenship due to an Act of Congress. In return he trained the US special forces in close hand to hand combat. Mr. Yamakura traveled the pro fight circuit with Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris as well.
I receive my Judo rank from Judo living legend Hanshi Toney Raven. My JuJitsu Rank comes from USJA and Nippon Yawara Aiki Jujitsu Renmei (Europe), Surite Kempo training was over a 12 year period with Oyata standout Stan Hart.
I have dilligently trained in Goju for 36 years (as of Jan 2009), my rank is recognized by 9 international Sokeship Councils as well as my Soke title as founder of Ateru Goju Ryu Karate Jutsu - a sovereign Goju style which reinfuses the China Hand back into Goju Ryu.
To this day I am happy to teach everyone from US Navy S.E.A.L.S. all the way down to 3-5 year old "Tiny Tigers". Goju and the arts my passion. I still feel like a giddy child when I think, talk or do martial arts. On the topic of the UFC - The first guy I help train to cage fight found in UFC 6 in 1995. I have been training cage fighters ever since.
Note: I am available and do travel worldwide to do seminars on Kata, bunkai and my Five Hands System of True Soft response to True Attack Velocity-which was featured on the NAPMA Jan 2008 Innovations DVD which also included fight legend Joe Lewis.
10 Dan Goju, 6th Dan Judo, 3rd Dan JuJitsu, 5th Dan Kempo, 8th Dan SanRyuDo
Achievements and Awards:
I hate this part.but here's a couple for ya. "I was inducted with "Iceman" Chuck Liddel and Frank Shamrock at the 2004 UMAHoF, and recieved my Diamond Life award with Jean Jacques Machado at my friend Alan Goldberg's Action Martial Arts Hall of Honors in 08.
What Martial Arts Has Taught You:
That if you train harder than any Sensei requires you to, lose your ego by completely immersing yourself into your art for arts sake, and are willing to keep an open mind, you will find the knowledge that each move holds for you. Also, you will eventually get to become good friends with guys like my pals Hanshi George Alexander, Kiyoshi Dana Abbott, Hanshi Toney Raven, Sifu Alan Goldberg, Kiyoshi Devorah Dometrich and on and on. Of course, such friendsips only come as a by product of well earned respect and dedication to ones art.
