March Character Lesson: Integrity

Teaching children how to act with integrity is vital for their development. Without integrity, children break promises, lie, and have no concern for others. Integrity means to adhere to moral and ethical principles, and if taught correctly, children will take these lessons with them as they grow up.

Here is a guideline regarding children and integrity based on age:

With children ages 3 and 4: they are learning right from wrong. Teach them about the importance of telling the truth.

With children ages 5 and 6: they are beginning to understand other people’s feelings. Teach them how to treat other’s the way you want to be treated.

With children ages 7 and 9: they are becoming responsible. Teach them how to take pride in their responsibilities, particularly with promises they make.

With children ages 10 to 14: they want to be independent. Teach them how to apply ethics when making independent choices.

Integrity is by far one of the very best character traits one can have. People with integrity make better choices and are more responsible. Having integrity can take a long time to learn, but the more a child practices this, the more likely he or she will develop this crucial value.

Character Lessonz updates include:

ü Character 101 instructor study sheet

ü Parent letter

ü Four weeks of age-specific character mat chats and drills

Here’s how to use your Character Lessonz material:

1. Print out all of the character material

2. Cover the character 101 study sheet with your staff

3. Distribute the parent letter via mail or email

4. Option A for the age-specific character mat chats and drills:

§ Before you bow in, have your students circle up and cover the character planner. Once you are done, line up your students and begin class.

5. Option B for the age-specific character mat chats and drills:

§ After calisthenics, circle up your students and cover the character planner. Once you are done, proceed to your normal curriculum.

6. Option C for the age-specific character mat chats and drills:

§ After your cover the daily curriculum, circle up your students and cover the character planner. Once you are done, finish with an exciting game.

7. Your character planners will take approximately 2 to 4-minutes depending on the planner and how much extra detail you choose to add.

8. If your students are assigned to classes, then you only have to cover the planner once per week, per age group. If your students have an open option for training, then you may want to cover the planner several times so that every student has a chance to learn the lesson.

Monthly Age-specific Drillz – Testing Requirement

This month begins the 8-part series of testing requirements for our 5 and up programs. We are also launching our new Early Skillz for 3 and 4 year olds. This information was requested by many of our C4K members, and you asked so we delivered!

Here’s the age-specific skills covered in this month’s drills:

3 and 4 year olds will build the important fundamentals of kicking while counting, walking, and hitting targets. This is the first of 8 new skills for our new 3 and 4 year old curriculum.
5 and 6 year olds will test for their focus stripe.
7 to 9 year olds will test for their agility stripe.
10 to 14 year olds will test for their basic stripe, which is now referred to as their dexterity stripe.
