I have two quick martial-arts training tips for you today ...

I have two quick martial-arts training tips for you today ...

by Keith Pascal

1. Combining To End Procrastination -- This is an easy tip.
Create an exercise with multiple components. Mix and match
what you do like to practice with what you avoid.

For example, let's say you hate to practice kicks, but you
love to practice punching. So, invent a drill where you
snap a low, knee kick, immediately followed by a straight
blast set of punches to the upper body.

The exercise will be fun, and you will have convinced yourself
to practice what you normally avoid. In this case, you trick
yourself into practicing kicks.

2. Double Boring -- Let's continue the example of procrastinating
your kicks. One way to make the practice session more fun is
to double up on what you don't like.

For example, if practicing front thrust kicks is a chore, then
combine them with back kicks. Back kick, and then shoot straight
from the back kick to a front kick with no pause and no
setting your foot down in between kicks.

You could even throw a back kick -- front kick -- and then
a side kick in one, super-fast sequence.

Try it. It's a lot of fun.

What two boring techniques do you have to practice that could
be made more entertaining when performed together?

I hope these tips are of use. And if you have any motivation
challenges, know that help "is" on the way. Soon.

Hi Keith

I look forward to reading some of your older articles if you're going to put them up on here. I have been a member of your emails for a couple of years but I obviously missed about the first 400 so maybe this is my chance to read some of your best of the best.

Cheers
AJ

ps A quick comment on this article... I like training the front kick straight to a back heel kick while throwing the same sides hand as a forward punch at the same time to create opposing forces and keeping the combination balanced (it also means your getting a double shot into your forward attacker)

This works much bette than writing you emails about your articles in the 'zine Keith.
I have one thing to ad to your post above-
When practicing "boring" technique- make it exciting my visualizing the bunkai used in different situations. I do this frequently with Kenjutsu. I think of single or multiple opponent scenarios an play them out in steps as I am dealing with one adversary at a time. You can do the sam thing with front thrust kicks and back kicks as an example and add side kicks to it. We used to do a drill in Kenpo much like this- multi directional kicks using focus mitts. the idea was to begin slowly and work up speed to take out adversaries in multiple directions. It was a lot of fun and ended up making many of my practicalkicks more pwerful as it builds strength while you are doing it. Use a stop watch and see if you can beat your own time. in short- there are all kinds of things you can do to make boring training fun.

I really am naive to this. What will happen to the article above? Next week, when I want to add another article, do I take this one down?
Help is always appreciated.

Keith - there you go! You are doing this just fine now. You can place links in your group discussion posts and point people to your writings external to this community. The purpose of know links in the signature is to prevent spam-like promotion outside of areas it is warranted. Welcome to the community!

I can only hope :-)

Not sure how I can point anyone to my writing if external links aren't allowed in the sig files, but we'll see.

It should be interesting.
