I am just curious how many other instructors / dojo owners in this group are facing tough sales times in their areas. My dojo are in rural areas with populations less than 10,000 in the main city and 38,000 county wide. We are still signing up new students but at an alarmingly reduce amount as well as having lost some students who families moved out of our for work related issues.

How is it effecting your dojo and what have you done to combat against people's unwillingness to part with thier money due to the recession fears?

We have seen a drop in renewals due to job loss of fear of job loss. Our new sales are up overall. We do, however, see a drop in the "Extras". For example, while our testing numbers are solid, people aren't participating as much in summer camps, in school tournaments, buying extra t-shirts, etc...

One thing we have done is to allow our members the opportunity to wear a specific t-shirt to class all summer. We, therefore, sold over 100 shirts. We also had great success with our summer promotion; Train for the whole Summer for $149. We included a uniform and had over 30 new summer members.

We also have started a "Battle of the Sexes" Challenge. Basically if we have more adult men sigh up over the next 2 months, then i will take ALL of my adult males out for a guy night. If more female adults start over the next 2 months, then my wife wins and she takes all the adult females out for a girls night. We started it 2 weeks ago and already enrolled 10 new adults (most of them parents of students).

Outside of that, we have worked hard to continue teaching planned out, high energy classes. This has lead to higher referrals and more active members.
My school is in the city of Cincinnati and to our surprise we are having a banner year, especially in the 3-7 year old sign-ups. This is after we introduced our first significant rate increase in six years. We are still trying to understand the trend?
