Tip of the Week
Newsletters & E-Letters

In one of the past Tips that I sent out, I mentioned 7 easy methods to increase your cash flow. One of the methods was to create newsletters for both leads and students. In this issue, I want to go more into depth and explain what kinds of information should be in a newsletter.

First, make sure you have content that will engage your audience. You don’t want to have the spot prices for oil in a newsletter for martial arts student. Take the time to get to know your students and see what kind of topics and issues stimulate them. Then, come up with a general layout. One thing with newsletters is the tendency to overload the layout with content. You want to position your newsletter so that each section is clear and distinguishable, and the content isn’t cluttered. You want your promotional sections to standout from the rest of the content, and your banners and headers to jump out.

Here is a general layout for a typical newsletter:

Article: This should encompass a short piece of prose or news that talks about the latest events at your school or in the martial arts industry.
Success story: This can be a student testimonial, a short testimonial written by you regarding a student etc.
Events and News: Events and news that are happening at your school . Example: Belt testing, new classes, new program, new instructor, new black belts and etc.

One thing that you shouldn’t forget is to two different kinds of newsletters-- one for your students and one for your prospective leads. There isn’t such a big difference between the two except that the Leads Newsletter is filled with offers and promotional material, giving them the chance to get them interested once again and potentially signing them up.

In general we have to types of newsletters

a) Newsletters: this would be printed letters that you can hand of to your students when they come in to school or have it mailed out. Unfortunately, now adays there are not many advantages in creating this kind of newsletters as they are costly, unenvironmentally friendly and tracking their efficiency is almost impossible to measure.

b) E-newsletter: This type of newsletter is either emailed or hosted on websites. There are many advantages in choosing this option and they are as follows:

I. There are no printing costs involved with the method so it makes it very cost efficient.

II. They are easier to monitor. Using ChampionsWay campaigns monitor section you are able to identify how many of the emails have been opened and which are the most popular hyperlinks that people click on.

III. E-newsletters are easy to access. These newsletters will be available to the readers at any given time. In today’s age of technological advancements, many of us are able to access our emails using our phones, laptops and other devices virtually anywhere.

IV. By condensing your e-newsletter information, you are able to direct traffic directly to your website. Try to put hyperlinks on some of the information that sends people back to your website for more information and provide full articles on your website. By doing so, you will be able to generate more traffic to your website. These efforts will help you increase your search engine ranking and click through rates.
Hyperlinks are very important, because they show you what has been clicked most (what people find most interesting). E-newsletters allow you to test different materials and different themes. You are then able to measure what subjects have been effective and provide content that is targeted and specific to the demographic you are trying to reach.

V. E-newsletters also allow you to provide interactive content. You are able to upload or link to videos, picture galleries, audio files and on your newsletter . When is the last time your printed newsletter provided a streaming video?
