very well actually. it has definately been a weird 12 months. i was anticipating a bad turn due to the economy, but we have broken sales records 9 of the last 12 months, and, i have added 27 new students just in the past 6 weeks alone, which is really weird because as we all know here in Canada (southern ontario anyways) all indoor activities stop come May 24 and everyone congregates at the beach!

So...how are all you Canadian school operators doing in today's economy?

Mr. MacBenn, I recommend you message Mr. Walsh, he has a wealth of info about starting up a location in Canada, particularly BC where he has been operating since he started.

Hi Guys,

I'm based in the UK and multi-discplinary martial arts but my visa application is going through to establish a school in British columbia in hopefully the coming couple of years (Embassy pending!). So hope you dont mind if I join the group to share business ideas and advice. I just spent the last couple of years running an academy with between 200 and 300 students quite successfully despite the current economic climate. Does anyone know of any market research readily available in UK or Canada based on the martial arts economic climate? PDF documents preferably but all considered helpful!

Jon,

I remember the jump! I think I had 50 students at the time (probably less...beware instructor that give round numbers for their student count!). I agree. My goal is to get this group actively communicating and build it to over 100 members by June. Pass the word to Canadian school owners and instructors!

I can't stress how important it would be to have a group of like minded individuals meet at the MMA expo to exchange some best practices. We tried this once a few years ago, and although the turn out was reflective of our first year trying it - one instructor had his life changed as a result of the discussions. He moved from part-time to full-time instruction, a jump all of us can relate to as possibly the hardest decision to make as you get started...

Mr. Chopik is committed to adding the Martial Arts business aspect to the show, which already features workshops on curriculum, fight nights, and an exhibitor hall. He does however need us to step up and be there to support the movement.

I'd like to welcome our new members. We seem to be gaining some momentum. Feel free to start a discussion on any topics related to martial arts in Canada. You may also want to join the MMA Expo group which will be a very worthwhile event in June of 2009.

One idea I have had would be to create a MA Supershow for the Canadian Martial Arts Business Community. I guess that was part of the idea at one MMA Expo (the one that I meet Master Farid, and Jon Mallach). I would support it and spread the word, perhaps connect it to the MMA Expo in Toronto?

Gerald,

Thank you so much. I have heard great things about the Expo from previous years and I will be attending in June. Please feel free to post any registration details to this group to help get the word out. I appreciate your offer of meeting space. It would be great to expand our network of Canadian School Owners. I will chat with you soon about the invitation to other school owners in Canada. I hope that your event planning is going well!
