ChampionsWay! Martial Arts Business Community

Hi Cway,

One thing I have not heard about is the implementation of a After School Program. The kind where you pick up the kids from their schools with a School Owned Bus (decorated in your school logo's etc) and take them to your After School Homework/Martial Arts Program.

This program sees to be a very, very successful way of making some good $$$.

But, I have never heard from Sensei Nick or anyone recommending this type of program as a Income Generator?

Love to hear peoples opinions on the subject, if they have a program? And does it really make Money?

Thanks,

John

John, feel free to contact me regarding the after school program. I also give info to those who are part of the MAST group regarding this. Our program is the ONLY one in the world where we have clients sign for $60K. I look forward to speaking with you.
Kristin Kellin has a great program down in Florida. Her and her husband Ross really do a good job. If you goto the networking section in the library you could contact her.
Thanks for the invite Master Richards!

Also, Thanks for the info Sensei Nick.

I was hoping to hear about what peoples thought were about the implentation of a "After School" Program.

I know their are people claiming to be making upwards of $30,000 a month with such a program in place.

Also, it seems to change the dynamic of a School to be more of a "babysitting centre?"

Lastly, such a program may only work in a demographic where both parents work and are looking for aftercare.

Thoughts, opinions are your 2 cents are appreciated!

Real Talk

We offered the "after school program" like 8 years ago. We made money doing it. The only thing I realized was that I did feel like it was taking away from my main goal, which was to build a martial arts school.

Then when the kids had half days, and if a driver was sick, the list for me goes on and on. It just was not me.

My advice: Maybe go see a school that offers it, and is doing well with it. If you spend a day with them it should determine if you really want to go that route.

I tried it here on long island. At the time i was with Maia (Martial Arts Industry Association) Master Jim King has one in Florida. He does real well with it. I Tried it at the time I had parents that wanted to do it. I had a bus company hired that was i was going to pay $20 a Weekl per child wheather the child came once a week or 5 times a week was going to charge parents $100 a week. The School District shut the whole thing down. They own their own bus company and would not let another bus company on their schools property. I have not tried since then Not many schools do it on long island that i know of. The ones that do usually have a van and have one of their instructors pick up the kids but that carrys high liability for the school owner because now you have to insure the van. Hope this info helps
John,

My husband and I run and After School Program at out facility. We have two 15 passenger vans (with our school logo on them). We pick up kids from all the schools in a 5-10 mile radius of our school. This program can be very lucrative! Beside the fact that you will generate a weekly income from tuition, the parents also train! I charge $60 a week, this includes: daily pick up from schools, martial arts class, homework time and snack time. I do not provide snacks, I have a snack machine or they can bring a snack. We teach American Jiu Jitsu to our kids, so we call our program After School Jiu Jitsu. Pick up is at 6pm.

Ross originally started this program and I came in about 5 years ago and started helping. We are NOT a daycare and I tell everyone of my parents this before they sign up. I have several employees that help run our ASJ program. I love our after school program! I would never not do it, but that is because I like the money to much!! I have flyers, packets and a curriculum if you are interested...

ASJ is a great program to have! A lot of my parents have started training as well, which is great because that brings in more $$. The word of mouth from my parents is also fantastic! The more people yo have the better!

I will up-load some of my ASJ stuff in the networking section of the library. My summer camp packet from last year is in there as well. If you do an after school program a summer camp is a MUST! I do mine from 7am-6pm and charge $80 a week per child. What you charge per week will depend on your market where you are located. I have 5 other schools with in 5 miles of me, so I have to be affordable to compete. I have the best program in my area. Ross was the first to start a Martial Arts after school program 12 years ago, and it has been going strong ever sense!!

Thanks Kristin!

Nicki,

I run and After School program and in response to your questions..

It would only change the dynamic of your school if you allow it to. I make sure all my parents know before they even sign up that we ARE NOT a daycare. If you have a scheduled routine that you do daily with the program, it can be ran just like a regular class.

Our schedule is
2-3-pick up from schools
3-3:30- my 8 and under class changes out and eats snack
3:30-4:15- 8 and under class
4:30-5:15- 9 and up class
5:15-6 clean up and pick up for parents

I am a huge believer in structure and if you stay on a schedule your program will not be a daycare.

Lastly, if there is one thing that I know, it is that people are always having kids, so an after school program will always be necessary no matter what type of economy or how many parents.

Thanks,
Kristin Kellin

We have after school program (6 years now) with 29 kids in it

We have two 15 passenger vans we pick up kids in. We plan to purchase a third van this summer. If you know how to set-up your insurance it is not bad at all.

We have also negotiated with the school distrcit to drop-off kids from two of the local schools for us.

Our spring break and summer camps usuayy hav 35-40 kids in them. They are a natural extension of our after school program.

If run properly, the dynamics of the school should only improve. If run improperly you just have a glorified daycare.

I love our after school program. Anyone can feel free to call with questions.
